Miles Ahead Monday: Resistance, Notion, Hawaii

Hey friend,

A couple announcements before we get into things this week. I intended to send out this email last week but have been caught up attending my sister's college graduation and on vacation in Hawaii (more on that later).

Also... Purposeful Productivity is finally available for pre-order at the lowest price it'll ever be. Full program launches in August 2025. Click here to learn more.

Question of the Week

A subscriber recently left this comment that perfectly describes a problem we've all likely faced at some point.

The uncomfortable truth for most people is that: You are your biggest obstacle.

But simply trying to be "more motivated" or "procrastinate less" usually doesn't work. I prefer to view this mysterious force as what Steven Pressfield calls "Resistance" with a capital R—a personified enemy we must defeat.

Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work. It will perjure, fabricate, falsify; seduce, bully, cajole. Resistance is protean. It will assume any form, if that’s what it takes to deceive you. It will reason with you like a lawyer or jam a nine-millimeter in your face like a stickup man. Resistance has no conscience. It will pledge anything to get a deal, then double-cross you as soon as your back is turned. If you take Resistance at its word, you deserve everything you get. Resistance is always lying and always full of shit.

Resistance shows up differently for everyone. For me, it's "paralysis by analysis"—endlessly editing videos that are already 90% perfect instead of creating the next one, or spending hours tweaking my course landing page instead of just hitting publish.

Resistance will continue to pop up for even the most successful professionals in any field. The difference is that they've learned to spot this self-sabotage early and overcome it quickly.

My favorite way to defeat Resistance is to make it work for me, not against me and use it as a compass that guides me towards what I must focus on most in my life.

Like a magnetized needle floating on a surface of oil, Resistance will unfailingly point to true North—meaning that calling or action it most wants to stop us from doing. We can use this. We can use it as a compass. We can navigate by Resistance, letting it guide us to that calling or action that we must follow before all others. Rule of thumb: The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.

The thing you're avoiding? That's exactly what you should be doing.

Tool of the Week: Notion

I've been on and off using Notion for years because it often got overly complex. But sometimes the obstacle isn't the tool—it's how we use it.

Notion finally clicked when I stopped trying to make it do everything. I use it for one thing: high-level project organization that keeps my energy focused on the bottlenecks in my career and business.

The board view helps me intentionally define what I'm actively working on vs. what's up next vs. what's on the back burner. When I clearly establish my focus for this season (and more importantly, what I'm NOT focusing on), it stops me from constantly jumping between projects and saying yes to ever opportunity that comes my way.

But I still recommend starting with the simplest tool that works. An index card and digital calendar might be enough for some, while others need more complex systems. It depends entirely on your work and commitments.

Life Update

Just wrapped up my sister's college graduation in LA (time flies!) and spent the past week in Hawaii for my first real vacation in quite a while.

Leaving Hilo today for Kona. I love the emphasis on nature, community, plastic-free living, and quality fruit and meat here on the Big Island.

Perfect way to end Q2—time to reflect, recharge, and reset before Q3 starts in July.

Stop Getting in Your Own Way
